New Year, new goals, new chances. There's nothing magical that happens when the calendar rolls to the next year. But, there is something symbolic when the calendar restarts in January. It's the motivation many of us use to wrap our minds around the next 12 months and the goals and resolutions we want to make. There's optimism about what can be done, what impact can be made, what relationships are going to happen. It's child-like, really. It's akin to the spirit when we were five years-old and looked at the world as a blue ocean of opportunity; nothing was insurmountable.

There's something that happens to many of us as we age. It's the same thing that happens today as we progress past the first of January. We stop believing in change, we lose trust in our abilities, our faith diminishes. We blame it on having too much to do, other competing priorities, not enough time in the day. But the truth is, you've lost your confidence. The result? Unfulfilled goals, dreams and resolutions. Sometimes it's a perpetual cycle of wanting and never achieving. I mean, how many times has weight loss and happiness been the goal for the year, to then be the same goal the following year?

Confidence is a mindset. It's all mindset, right? Mindset is the foundation of everything you do in life and will make or break your outcome. Napoleon Hill so eloquently stated, "Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve." Taking that a step further, Henry Ford said, "If you think you can or can't, you're right." We create our own realities of what we allow ourselves to envision, and our mindset will determine the distance of our dreams.

You might be thinking, hold on. I don't have time to work out. I believe I can lose weight, but I simply don't have time. It's a time problem, not a mindset or confidence problem.

Or is it?

You believe you can lose weight, but you don't have time. That's a belief you chose to make. Here's what you've told your subconscious:

  • You don't believe there's flexibility in your day for anything more
  • You don't believe you have a choice in how you spend your time during the day
  • You don't believe health is a top priority

You don't actually believe you can because you don't believe you have the time. You've told yourself you can't and therefore you're right — you won't lose weight.

What if the doctor gave you five months to live unless you lost weight. Would you change your mindset and priorities? My guess; you would. You are the conductor of your ship and yes, you are going to have waves that you must navigate through that you never anticipated. Does that mean you aren't in control? You're the captain. You're supposed to be at the wheel making the decisions that are going to help you get through the calm and the storm. Time constraints are a storm, not time to let go of the wheel.

If health is a priority and you want to lose weight, you need more faith. That everything is going to work out as designed and the world won't fall apart if you put yourself in the equation of your life. You need more trust in yourself. That you can keep your world afloat even if you block off 30 minutes a day to focus on your health. You need to believe that everything is possible and believe in your ability to lead your life to success despite the day-to-day challenges.

Trust, faith and belief is the definition of confidence. It's the state of feeling certain about the outcome. It's not a wavering of what could happen. It's believing that you can and will make your goals a reality. Maybe you've lost some of the trust within yourself because you keep setting goals and not following through. Maybe you've lost some belief in yourself because you've lost the connection to who you are. Maybe you've lost some faith because nothing seems to go your way. Thus enters excuses, discarded dreams and an unfulfilled life. It's no way to live. You get one shot, shouldn't it look the way you want it to?

It's confidence you need. It's connecting to who you are, your purpose and what you want in life. It's understanding your mind and learning how to make it work for you. And not just react without second-guessing if that's the best way to think. It's getting into action and building that trust and belief. Connecting to the self. Mastering the mind and action will help build the strongest and most unshakable confidence within yourself to tackle anything. Time won't be an issue because you'll find the time. You'll find whatever it is. The knowledge, the skills, the resources needed when you have the confidence to achieve your goals. Excuses won't be an option because you'll have the solution. When you have confidence, there's nothing that stands between you and your goals. As you stretch and grow in life, your confidence will continue to be challenged. It's the faith, trust and belief that will get you through.

Confidence is the bridge to your goals and you are the captain.
