Key Takeaways

  • Major U.S. companies are focusing on investing in employee satisfaction beyond shareholder value.
  • Glassdoor's list of top 10 U.S. companies for 2024 reveals preferences for supportive cultures and development opportunities.

If you're considering a career change this year, it pays to investigate where you'll actually be better off. And that might not necessarily be the company offering the highest salary.

Nowadays, U.S. employees want more from their companies, including flexible work and transparent leadership. In fact, when people have the option to work flexibly, 87% of them will take it, per McKinsey & Company's recent American Opportunity Survey. And relationships with management are the No. 1 factor in employee satisfaction, according to another report from the consulting firm.

Many top employers are answering the call. In 2019, chief executives from the Business Roundtable, including the leaders of Apple and JPMorgan Chase, argued that shareholder value is no longer "the purpose of a corporation" and instead stressed the importance of other factors — like investing in employees, The New York Times reported.

What does that look like, exactly? Employer review site Glassdoor compiled a list of the U.S. companies that are giving employees the work experience they crave, which includes those must-haves in flexibility and leadership, and more.
